Al 14/08/2017 lo yen ha guadagnato il 7% circa sul dollaro dall'inizio dell'anno ed è considerato da molti una valuta "safe haven" contro il dollaro USA. Il Giappone sta vivendo un periodo di deflazione ed è considerato un paese a basso interesse, avendo una politica sul tasso di interesse oltre lo zero, di conseguenza la sua valuta è ampiamente usata come carry trade, ovvero, gli investitori chiedono prestiti in un paese a basso interesse per poi investire in rendimenti maggiori. Tuttavia, in caso di picco del tasso, esso potrebbe avere un'estrema volatilità e un effetto domino su tutto il mercato FX. Nel complesso, il surplus del paese dovrebbe permettere allo yen di continuare a essere una valuta "safe haven" almeno per il prossimo futuro.
