Analysis
The Brazilian real has been among the strongest emerging market currencies over the past year. USD/BRL fell from near 5.99 to around 5.10 (a 13% move in BRL's favour) as COPOM raised the SELIC rate by 450 basis points between mid-2024 and mid-2025, reaching 15%, the highest since 2006.
That kind of real interest rate differential attracted significant capital inflows. In Q1 2026 the BCB started easing, cutting 25bp to 14.75% - less than the 50bp the market had priced. Inflation has cooled from around 5.5% in mid-2025 to roughly 3.9% on a 12-month basis, approaching the 3% target, though oil-driven price pressures from the Iran conflict are complicating the picture.
